Poweshiek Animal League Shelter
Grinnell, Iowa
Poweshiek Animal League Shelter (PALS) recently opened a
shelter to serve all of Poweshiek County. As we continue to grow,
we desperately need MORE VOLUNTEERS!
PALS is a completely volunteer based, non-profit organization.
So if you enjoy working with animals, please consider helping.
If you are interested in becoming a PALS
volunteer, please consider attending one of the following volunteer
training sessions:
Tuesday, June 3 at 6 p.m. or Saturday,
June 7 at 10 a.m.
Sessions will be held at the shelter, which is located just south
of Grinnell (across from the Westfield Church and Cemetery)
Please register by emailing kmjhess@mchsi.com
or calling 641-990-0396.
Did you know?
1. Pals has 4 shifts, 7 days a week, 365 days a year
2. The shifts are at 7 am, noon, 5 pm and 9 pm
3. A typical shift only takes about an hour
4. The shifts consist of feeding, walking, and cleaning
5. You will never be on a shift by yourself. Each shift has
a lead volunteer that can help direct you.
PALS' mission is to provide care and shelter
for homeless or unwanted animals, to strive to find permanent,
loving homes for these animals, to respond to animal neglect and
abuse reports, to educate children and adults in our communities
on the humane treatment of animals, and on the importance of spaying
and neutering to prevent pet overpopulation.
PALS has worked extremely hard for the past three years to provide
our county with a shelter. Prior to our opening, the only option
for stray animals picked up by city police and sheriff's departments
in Poweshiek County was a 7-day stay at local veterinary clinics.
If owners or an adopting family were not found in that shots period
of time, the animals were then euthanized. PALS has stepped in
not only to provide a safe haven for these homeless animals, but
to also ensure they receive responsible vet care including spay/neuters,
shots, deworming, and flea/tick control, as well as addressing
any emergency medical concerns.
Since the very first meeting of PALS in February of 2004, we
have:
- Elected a fourth year of board of directors
- Received our 501(c)3 non-profit status and shelter license
- Amassed a list of close to 260 volunteers/donors in Poweshiek
County
- Had numerous fundraisers, and are perpetually looking forward
to our next fund-raising activity
- Established a substantial community presence
- Continued to submit grant proposals to various foundations across
Iowa and the United States
- Purchased 6 acres of land with a steel building and renovated
this building to become a shelter licensed by the state of Iowa
- Helped over 700 dogs and cats (and bunnies, ferrets, horses,
turtles, birds and fish!) to find loving and responsible homes |
